Addresses and custom domains
Your free address, what names are allowed, and how to use your own domain on a paid plan.
DraftThis page is a first draft and may change.
Your free address
Every server has a free address: name.serverhost.example. Players type it into Minecraft's Add Server
box. There is no port to remember. Java players use the normal port (25565) and Bedrock players use
the normal Bedrock port (19132); they are filled in for them.
Choosing a name
A name is:
- 3 to 20 characters,
- lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens,
- first come, first served.
Some words are held back (admin, hub, play, staff, status, www, api and a few more), and rude words are blocked. If a name is taken, pick another. Archived servers keep their name, so a name from an old unused server may still be taken.
TBD: whether you can rename a server later, and what happens to the old address.
Custom domains
On paid plans you can use your own domain, for example play.yourserver.com. A server has its free
address plus at most one custom domain.
- Open Settings, Domain and type your domain.
- At your domain registrar, add the records the panel shows you (a CNAME and an SRV record). They point your domain at our servers for your region.
- The panel checks the records live and confirms when they work. Then your domain goes live.
You need to own the domain. Changing a record at your registrar can take a little while to spread. The free address keeps working too. Your domain points at the same shared entrance as the free address, so players never need a port.
The hub
play.serverhost.example is our hub. It is a server where players pick a server to join. Every server on our
network also has the command /hub, which takes a player there. You cannot turn this off. The hub
shows servers in a list ranked by how many players are on right now, with sleeping servers below; boosted
servers are pinned at the top and marked "Boosted". The list searches by name, tagline and a genre tag you
pick, and it can be filtered by version and region. There is no list on our website. See Rules and reports
for how servers are listed.
Sharing your address
Give the address to friends, or put it on a server list. The best thing to put on your own site or Discord is the address itself. Do not share your SFTP details or your panel link.
