Settings and the MOTD editor

The MOTD editor with a live preview, the icon, game settings, the world, version and software, your address and custom domain, region, hub listing and internet access.

DraftThis page is a first draft and may change.

Settings has friendly forms for the things owners change most. Every config file can also be edited raw: Edit server.properties as a file opens it in Files.

Basics

  • MOTD: the message under your server's name in a player's server list. See the editor below.
  • Server icon: upload a PNG or JPEG. We resize it to 64 by 64 pixels.
  • Difficulty, Game mode for new players and Most players at once (only memory limits how many can really play; there is no cap on any plan).
  • PvP, Hardcore and Allow flying.

Press Save changes. Each value is checked; if something is not allowed the field says what to fix and nothing is saved. Some changes need a restart, and the panel says so.

When your server gets more memory or CPU (for example on a bigger plan), the change applies at once. When it gets less memory, the new amount applies at the next start, so a running server is never cut short in the middle of a game. Settings the host manages for you, such as the server port and online mode, are not in the forms and cannot be changed there, because changing them would stop players reaching your server.

Region pin

Pin to region keeps your server in its own region (NA or EU): it never starts anywhere else, even when you choose a quick start. See Sleeping and waking.

The MOTD editor

A live preview shows your server as it looks in the server list: icon, name, player count and the two MOTD lines. Type, and the preview changes.

  • The colour squares and the style buttons (Bold, Italic, Underline, Strike, Scrambled, Reset) insert a code where your cursor is. Codes start with &, for example &a for green. &#12ab34 sets any colour.
  • Only two lines show in the list, and about 59 characters fit on a line. The editor warns you past either.

Names and MOTDs pass a word filter before they show in the hub's server list. A server that is not listed is not filtered, because only your own players see it.

World

The seed (used for new worlds only), view distance and simulation distance (2 to 32 chunks; lower is lighter on memory) and spawn protection. Free servers start at a view distance of 6. The world border is set per world on the Worlds page.

Version and software

Pick Paper, Purpur or Vanilla and a Minecraft version, press Check what would break, then switch. See Versions and software. Two switches sit here too:

  • Let Bedrock players join: phones, consoles and Windows Bedrock join through our proxy. See Bedrock crossplay.
  • Let older Java versions join: down to 1.8, through ViaVersion.

Address and domain

Your free address (name.serverhost.example) always works; press Copy to share it.

Custom domain (paid plans): type a domain you own, such as play.example.com, and press Save domain. The panel shows the exact CNAME and SRV records to add where you bought the domain, each name and value with a Copy button so you do not have to type them. Add them, then press Check now. Each record shows whether we found it. DNS changes can take up to an hour. The records stay on this page, so you can come back later, see them again and press Check now. A server has its free address plus at most one custom domain.

Region: where the server runs. Move to copies the world to the other region; the server is offline while it copies. Keep it in this region means it never starts anywhere else, even when this region is busy.

Show in the hub's server list: list or unlist the server in the hub picker.

Internet access

Your server reaches the internet only through an allowlist. The list shows what is allowed. To ask for a site a plugin needs, type it (for example api.example.com) and why, then press Ask for access. Our team reviews each request. Only exact site names on secure web traffic (port 443) can be asked for, not IP addresses or whole domains. Once a site is allowed, it works from the next time your server starts.

Premade setup settings

Premade setups have their own friendly settings, for example prices, hearts and rewards. See Premade setups.
