Spawn protection, combat and safety

The protected spawn, combat tags, new player protection, command limits and alerts for staff.

DraftThis page is a first draft and may change.

Every setup includes these safety rules. They slow things down or tell your staff; they never ban anyone by themselves.

The protected spawn

A square around the world spawn (150 by 150 blocks by default) where:

  • only owners and staff can build or break,
  • players cannot hurt each other,
  • monsters cannot hurt players,
  • explosions do not break blocks,
  • pistons cannot push or pull blocks across its edge, and water or lava cannot flow in.

Each of these is a setting. The spawn follows the world spawn point, so /setspawn moves it.

Combat tag

A hit between two players puts both "in combat" for 30 seconds, shown as a countdown. In combat:

  • teleport commands such as /spawn, /warp, /rtp and /home do not work (the list is a setting; other names of the same command, such as /town for /spawn, are blocked too),
  • gliding with an elytra is blocked (a setting); ender pearls can be blocked too,
  • leaving the game counts as dying, and the server says so (a setting).

New player protection

New players cannot be hurt by other players for their first 60 minutes of playtime. It ends early if they attack someone. They can end it themselves with /protection off; /protection shows how long is left.

Limits and alerts for staff

  • Command limit: a player can use 15 commands in 10 seconds. Faster than that, they are asked to slow down.
  • Many accounts from one internet address: when more than 3 accounts join from one address in a day, staff are told. We never store the address itself, only a scrambled code that cannot be turned back into it.
  • Kill farming: when the same two players kill each other more than 3 times in an hour, staff are told.

Alerts show in chat for staff with the sh.guard.alerts permission, and are saved in plugins/sh-guard/flags/. /guard flags lists recent ones.

Staff commands

/guard status <player>, /guard untag <player> (out of combat now), /guard unprotect <player>.

Settings

On the settings page under Safety: spawn protection on or off, spawn size, fighting, building, explosions and monster damage at spawn; combat tag length, blocked commands, elytra, ender pearls and leaving in combat; new player protection time; the command limit and the two alert levels.
