Extra ports and web plugins

How plugins with their own web page or their own port, such as maps and voice chat, work on our network.

DraftThis page is a first draft and may change.

Some plugins need more than the normal game connection. Two kinds are common: plugins with a web page, and plugins with their own port. Both work on every plan, free included.

Your server does not get a public port of its own. Everything goes through our proxy, which keeps your server private. Plugins that need more are handled for you, as described below.

Web plugins

Plugins such as BlueMap (a live map) or a stats page serve a web page. We serve it for you over secure HTTPS, with your server's name as the first part of the address and the plugin's path after it, for example https://name. plus our server pages domain plus /map/.

Server pages use a domain of their own, kept apart from Server Host's website and panel. That way a page that a plugin serves can never reach your panel sign-in, even if the plugin has a bug or someone changes it. TBD: the server pages domain is chosen together with the brand.

  1. Install the plugin. See Plugins.
  2. Restart your server.
  3. Open your server's page address with the plugin's path, for example /map/. The exact path for each plugin is TBD.

What to expect:

  • A web page only loads while your server is awake. A sleeping server shows a short page that says it is asleep: join it in Minecraft to wake it, then reload.
  • Pages are for viewing. Very large uploads to a plugin's page are refused.
  • For your visitors' privacy, plugins never see the address a visitor connects from.
  • Pages are kept apart from the Server Host website and panel, so a plugin's page can never reach your account. When a plugin's own reply tries to set a cookie for the whole pages domain, we drop it. Scripts on a page can still set such cookies themselves, so do not trust cookies on these pages for anything private.

Plugins with their own port

Plugins such as Simple Voice Chat use their own port (for voice chat, a UDP port). We open it for your server on our proxy. There is nothing to pay.

  1. Install the plugin.
  2. Set up the plugin's config as its page says. Which port to use and how it is set is TBD.
  3. Restart. Players connect as usual, and the plugin uses the extra port.

An extra port counts towards our abuse checks, like everything else.

If it does not work

  • Check that the plugin works on your Minecraft version and is loaded (the plugin appears in the console at start).
  • A web page needs the server awake.
  • If your plugin needs somewhere to connect out to, our allowed list may not include it. See Files and SFTP.
  • See Troubleshooting.
